The following is a listing of some of the Holy Week and Easter liturgies that will be celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle and at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

Palm Sunday, April 9: Cardinal Wuerl will bless palms and celebrate Mass beginning at 9:45 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Cathedral, 1725 Rhode Island Ave., N.W.

Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States, will bless palms and celebrate a noon Mass at the National Shrine, 400 Michigan Ave., N.E. The Mass will be broadcast live by the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN).

Monday of Holy Week, April 10: Cardinal Wuerl will celebrate a 7 p.m. Chrism Mass at St. Matthew’s Cathedral. During the Mass, he will bless the holy oils that are used in the Church’s sacramental celebrations throughout the year. The Mass also commemorates the founding of the priesthood by Jesus Christ.

Holy Thursday, April 13: Cardinal Donald Wuerl will celebrate a 5:30 p.m. Mass of the Lord’s Supper at St. Matthew’s Cathedral. The Mass commemorates Jesus’s Last Supper with the Apostles and includes the ritual washing of feet.

Archbishop Pierre will celebrate a 6 p.m. Mass of the Lord’s Supper at the National Shrine, which will be broadcast live by EWTN.

Good Friday, April 14: Cardinal Donald Wuerl will celebrate a 1 p.m. Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion at St. Matthew’s Cathedral. Later, at 3:45 p.m. at the cathedral, he will greet Spanish-speaking pilgrims who made a Way of the Cross procession through the streets of Washington.

Msgr. Walter R. Rossi, rector of the National Shrine, will celebrate a 3 p.m. Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion at the National Shrine, which will be broadcast live by EWTN.

Good Friday is a day of total abstinence from meat and also a day of fast, that is people are limited to one single full meal. The law of abstinence binds all Catholics age 14 and older. The law of fasting binds all Catholics from their 18th year until and including their 59th birthday.

Holy Saturday, April 15: Cardinal Wuerl will celebrate an 8 p.m. Easter Vigil Mass at St. Matthew’s Cathedral.

Archbishop Pierre will celebrate an 8 p.m. Easter Vigil Mass at the National Shrine, which will be broadcast live by EWTN.

Easter Sunday, April 16: Cardinal Donald Wuerl will celebrate a 10 a.m. Easter Sunday Mass at St. Matthew’s Cathedral.

At noon, Cardinal Wuerl will celebrate a solemn Easter Mass at the National Shrine. During the Mass, the faithful will renew their Baptismal vows. The Mass will be broadcast live by EWTN.

Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio of the Archdiocese of the Military Services, USA, will celebrate a 2:30 p.m. Spanish-language Easter Mass at the National Shrine, which will be broadcast live on EWTN Español.
