Pope, at audience, says St. Hildegard of Bingen is model for today

Pope Benedict XVI waves during his weekly general audience at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, Italy, Sept. 1.
St. Hildegard of Bingen, the 12th-century German mystic, used her gifts to build up the church at a time of trouble similar to today, Pope Benedict XVI said. St. Hildegard is relevant today because of "her love for Christ and his church, which was suffering in her time, too, and was wounded also then by the sins of priests and laypeople," the pope said. She also is a good model for today because of her "love for creation, her medicine, her poetry and music that is being recreated today," the pope said Sept. 1 at his weekly general audience in Castel Gandolfo.

Priesthood is about service, not status, pope says at ordination
A priest who seeks status rather than the will of God will be a slave to himself and to public opinion and will never discover how God wants to use his personal gifts and talents for the good of the Church and the world, Pope Benedict XVI said. Being ordained a priest requires "the courage to say 'yes' to the will of another," knowing that God and the Church will not erase his individuality, but will help him become all he can be, the pope said June 20, just before ordaining 14 new priests for the Diocese of Rome.
