Junior Saints: Mothers and Mary in month of May

“I admire my mom for many reasons; she is the strongest person I know. She is always there for me, and I could never ask for anyone else. No matter what, she keeps me and my little sister safe and happy. She has always been the first person I go to for anything. I have and will always look up to her; I could not have gotten any luckier.” – Artwork and writing by Mya Hartzer, seventh grade, Little Flower School, Great Mills, Maryland

Since we celebrate Mary and Mother’s Day in May, students were invited to draw a picture of Mary and write about what they admire about Mary, or draw a picture of their mother and write about what they admire about their mother.

Little Flower School, Great Mills

“My mom is one of the strongest women I know. In a lot of ways, she reminds me of Mary, she is my strength and my shield. She is always there for me when I am carrying my own cross like Jesus. One of the things I admire about her most is how she puts everyone before her, and she always takes care of everyone in her life. She is a true example of the mother I want to be one day.” – Rylee Goddard, eighth grade, Little Flower School, Great Mills, Maryland

“I admire Mary because she was very young when the angel came to her, and she didn’t say no to God. She was an amazing mother to Jesus. Also, she went to heaven, body and soul. She appeared to many people in different countries. My favorite apparition is when she appeared in Fatima to the children.” – Artwork and writing by Madelynn Beall, sixth grade, Little Flower School, Great Mills

“I admire that Mary always trusted and believed in Jesus even when it was hard. She always followed him and cared for him… She stayed true to him throughout his entire journey. Nobody else followed Jesus to the end like Mary did.” – Lucas Longmore, seventh grade, Little Flower School, Great Mills

“My mom is wonderful. I don’t know what I admire about her most. Maybe it’s how she deals with my brother, sister and me, or how determined, gracious, persevering, brave and caring she is. She comes home after a very long day as a doctor, takes me to practice, and then comes home and makes dinner for us. I guess what I admire most is how forgiving she is, because every time I make a mistake, I know my mom will be the first to forgive me.” – Artwork and writing by Sam Bowes, seventh grade, Little Flower School, Great Mills

She is a very hardworking person and never gives up; she always finds another way if it does not work the first time. She is very dedicated to her work and her family. Family time is one thing she is very dedicated to. She is a very loving person; she cares for and loves so many people. These are some things that I admire about my mother.” – Emily Wagner, seventh grade, Little Flower School, Great Mills

“Something I admire about Mary is that she trusted and followed God no matter what. Even though it was hard she still did it, not caring what other people thought of her. When life gets hard, we need to be like Mary and trust God. She was willing to give her son to us so we could be free. That is why Mary is the patron saint of blood donors, nuns, mothers and virgins.” – Adalene Jones, sixth grade, Little Flower School, Great Mills

“Mary is one human we should all aspire to be like. Her unwavering kindness extended to everyone she encountered. But what truly sets her apart is her remarkable resilience in the face of adversity. Time and time again, she faced challenges head-on with unwavering determination, emerging stronger and more resilient each time, reminding us all of the power of compassion and resilience in shaping a life of meaning and purpose.” – Paxton Burgan, eighth grade, Little Flower School, Great Mills

“The thing that I admire about Mary is her complete trust in God. When she and Joseph had to flee to Egypt, she trusted in God to protect her and her son. She had faith in God when she said yes to having the Son of God. It makes me realize, how can I not have faith in God when Mary, even when she was given no proof, still trusted God?” – Artwork and writing by Andres Strother, seventh grade, St. Bartholomew School, Bethesda

I love how she gave us Jesus and how she cared for him and loved him. I admire the faith Mary had in God and believed that through God, all things are possible.” – Veronika Eslava, seventh grade, St. Bartholomew School, Bethesda

“Mary is a mother you can always count on to bring our problems to Jesus. I know when something happens to me that is rough, I go to her and pray. I know she is bringing my problems to Jesus and making sure they are getting taken care of. I also love to talk to my mother, she listens and never disregards me. My mom always asks for my opinion and makes me feel loved every day. Whenever I am sad, I go to my mom and she cheers me up. I love my mother and Mary so much. So, what Mary means to me is someone who loves me just like my mother.” – Artwork and writing by Claire Schreiber, seventh grade, St. Bartholomew School, Bethesda

“One thing I admire about my mom is that she is a single mother of two children, my sister and me. She would do anything for us. Another thing I admire about my mom is how she does so much for me. Even with all the places I need to go, she is still very organized. There are so many things to admire about my mom, especially how faithful she is. My mom is a great Catholic. Sometimes when we can’t make it to our school church Masses, she will always find a way to make it to another church, so we can go to Mass. She doesn’t realize the amount of things to admire about her, and if I could write them, there would be over 100 things. She is so great and very special. I will always love and admire her so much.” – Olyvia Felix, eighth grade, St. Mary’s School, Bryantown

“I love Mary, our mother, because she gave birth to Jesus and she cares a lot about us. She is also the mother of God, and she is very important because she was born with no original sin. She was very brave, and she clearly went through a lot and had to watch her son get crucified. She was the only person except for Jesus to go up to heaven with body and soul. I am so happy she accepted the angel Gabriel’s request to fulfill God’s wish.” –Aidan Jakowicz, fifth grade, Cardinal Hickey Academy, Owings

“Mary, our heavenly mother, was a beautiful person inside and out. She loved all people and, to put it simply, was made of pure goodness. Children all around the world look up to her, not only as a role model, but as a mother. Mary watched helplessly as her only son suffered on the cross, knowing that Jesus was dying for us. Still, she loves us as if we were her own. In heaven, I imagine Mary surrounded by flowers, finally reunited with her son, Jesus.” – Artwork and writing by Tania Rivera, seventh grade, St. Elizabeth Catholic School, Rockville, Maryland

“I believe Mary helps my mother with her parenting and life. I love my mom and Mary. I’m grateful for them both. Mother’s Day is a great day to celebrate Mary and your mom. My mother helps me with a lot of stuff I could not learn by myself. She taught me manners and how to pray. Your mother is an important part of your life.” – Natalia Martinez, sixth grade, St. Elizabeth School, Rockville

“What I admire about my mom is that she is always there for me. She drives me to school and is a teacher there, too. We always come home in the car talking about her day with the first grade. She drives me everywhere for my softball games and has even become invested in the game, too. Now, every time there’s a softball game on TV (especially Maryland softball), we watch it together! Thank you, Mom, for everything you do for me, and happy Mother’s Day!” – Artwork and writing by Ashley Ruddy, seventh grade, St. Elizabeth School, Rockville

“Mother Mary is an incredible woman. She is Jesus’s mother, our loving mom, a sinless role model, the only person to rise to heaven with her body and soul (except for Jesus) and a devoted, prayerful person. When she was faced with the responsibility of raising the Son of God, she was very young, but she still enthusiastically said ‘yes.’ My mom and Mother Mary share many similarities. They are both gentle, selfless, caring, comforting, helpful, loving and prayerful. I am incredibly thankful as we approach Mother’s Day and always thankful that God blessed me with the gift of my mom and Mother Mary watching over me.” – Sarah Marie, seventh grade, St. Elizabeth School, Rockville

“I admire Mary for her complete faith in God when she accepted Jesus to be her son. Most importantly, she is the mother of everybody on this Earth, so she takes care of me when I am in a particularly bad situation, which is why I love praying to her. Also, Mary helped me get through a bad situation at the hospital, which makes me thankful and happy.” – Artwork and writing by Beatrice Constantin, seventh grade, St. Elizabeth School, Rockville

“My mother is a very admirable person. She ensures my well-being, protects me from harmful situations and nourishes me by putting food on the table. She also enables me to get a powerful, spiritual and respectable education at St. E’s. When I feel sick or down, she comforts and heals me. There are simply so many wonderful things that she does for me that I can’t list them all here. Thank you, Mom, for everything.” – Sam Hess, seventh grade, St. Elizabeth School, Rockville

“My mother is very hardworking. Just like our Mother Mary, my mother strives to prioritize her children and me. She does everything she can to make my siblings and me happy. Every day she goes to work at 6 p.m. and comes back at 8 a.m., and even then, she cooks breakfast and cleans the kitchen. She also walks the dog and makes the house shine. I love my mother, and I am happy that she is my mother.” – Artwork and writing by Abigail Getachew, seventh grade, St. Elizabeth School, Rockville

“My parents always encouraged praying the rosary. The rosary always reminds me how special our mother Mary was to be chosen out of all the women in her time to be born without sin and being the woman that was chosen to give birth to Jesus our Savior. That’s why when we pray a Hail Mary, we say, ‘Blessed are you among women,’ for God had very special plans for her.” – Valentina Cruceta, fifth grade, Our Lady Star of the Sea School, Solomons

She works hard to make sure we have shelter, food when we are hungry, and water. My mom also makes sure that I go to school and earn a good education. Mary is like my mom. She loves me, she cares for me, and she watches over me, making sure I always try to do the right thing. Whenever I am worried or nervous, I pray to Mary and she helps guide me. That is why I love Mary and my mom.” – Artwork and writing by Isabelle Mekonnen, fourth grade, Our Lady Star of the Sea School, Solomons

“Mary was only a normal woman of God until God chose her for something not so normal. God sent the archangel Gabriel to tell her that she was to give birth to the Son of God. Despite not knowing what would happen, Mary did the will of God. After Mary gave birth, she and her husband Joseph and her son whom she named Jesus moved to Nazareth. Mary would raise Jesus alongside Joseph and would care for him. Mary even witnessed Jesus’s first miracle when he was turning water into wine (at the wedding feast of Cana). Mary would even stand beside Jesus to watch his death on the cross. Mary felt unimaginable grief watching her son die. Mary continues to pray to God for children to this day. Mary was also crowned as the queen of heaven.” – Nicolas Olekson, seventh grade, Our Lady Star of the Sea School, Solomons

“I love Mary and my mom, because my mom loves me and takes care of me like how Mary would take care of Jesus. Mary and my mom both love me very much, and I appreciate them with all my heart. I’m thankful that they love me. Mary loves and protects me, and my mom keeps me safe and happy.” – Artwork and writing by Sadie Grey, fifth grade, Our Lady Star of the Sea School, Solomons

My loving and caring mom.

Outgoing, smart and pretty.

The person who loves me a lot.

Here for me no matter what.

Encouraging and kind.

Right there when I need her.

“My mom has been there since the day I was born, and I love her so much. She has loved me, protected me, and she has provided me with everything I need. And I’m so grateful to her.” – Acrostic poem and writing by Matilda Yearick, fourth grade, Our Lady Star of the Sea School, Solomons

“There are many things that I admire about my mom, and I want to be like her when I’m older. My mother cares for me and my brother, and she loves us… My mom always picks me up from school with a smile on her face… My mom always cooks food for me and my family which tastes amazing… My mom always helps me when I need help, and she always explains things when I don’t understand. I love my mom because she is a great parent, just like my dad.” – Michael Oluigbo, fifth grade, Blessed Sacrament School, Washington, D.C.

“I love my mom. My mom works so hard so that we can be happy. She is such a nice and caring person. My mom goes to work four out of five times a week. I love how even if she has a bad day, she always puts on a smile for me and my siblings. She loves to cook and read. I try to cook with her every month, but I read with her every day. My mom is everything and more. I love her.” – Eleanor Coelho, fifth grade, Blessed Sacrament School, Washington, D.C.

“I love my mother so much, because she is the best mother that you could ever ask for. She is amazing and cares so much for my family and me. She cleans, cooks and takes care of the house, so that when we come home, our house isn’t messy. My mom is so easy to talk to and helps us with all of our problems. She always has the best hugs with her warm arms that make you feel loved and safe. She picks up and drops off my sisters and me to our sports and school. She also makes long distance commuting hours driving us to sports games. Having three kids isn’t easy, but she does it with love and kindness and that is what makes her the best mother in the world!” – Avery Perkins, fifth grade, Blessed Sacrament School, Washington, D.C.

“There are many important people in my life, but of all of them, my mom is the most important. One thing I appreciate about my mom is that she makes dinner and every other meal for us every day of the year. Another thing I appreciate about my mom is if I request or need something, she tries her hardest to make it happen. Also, she is always doing the laundry to make sure we always can wear our favorite clothes. Finally, she takes care of me when I am sick.” – Alexander Komives, Blessed Sacrament School, Washington, D.C.

“One thing I admire about my mother is her hardworking quality. A second thing I admire about my mother is how much she loves her family. A third thing I admire about her is how she cares for me. A fourth thing I admire about her is how she helps me understand things. The last thing I admire about my mother is how she helps homeless people whenever she can.” – Artwork and writing by Enoch Turock, fifth grade, Blessed Sacrament School, Washington, D.C.

“There are many things I love about my mom. First, my mom always has a positive attitude. Second, my mom loves me unconditionally. Third, my mom always puts me before work. Her job knows that she cannot do any calls Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., because they know she is at my school picking me up. Last, she gets me ice cream or Starbucks if I am feeling sad. My mom is awesome!” – Jordyn Godette, fifth grade, Blessed Sacrament School, Washington, D.C.

“I love my mom so much. She is smart, amazing, pretty, funny and the right mom for me. Whenever I’m feeling sad or down, my mom makes me laugh and feel happy. My mom plans really great parties and events. My mom prays for me whenever I’m having a bad day. My mom always tells me the right thing to do. My mom does everything she can to make me and my siblings happy. She does so much for us. There is no way I can repay my mom for everything that she has done for me. I admire my mom so much. There is no other mom I would rather have than my mother. Whenever, wherever, she is there.” – Hattie Morrison-Sherrett, fifth grade, Blessed Sacrament School, Washington, D.C.

“I admire Mary because she carried Jesus in her body for months and then brought him into the world for him to do many good things on earth, like dying on the cross for our sins.” – Artwork and writing by Ariadne Marquez, fifth grade, Blessed Sacrament School, Washington, D.C.

“I love my mom so much, and she is the nicest person I know. She is so caring and generous. Next, my mom is super athletic, too! Mom plays tennis and is super good at it! She also used to be my lacrosse coach and played lacrosse in college. My mom is what makes my family and life amazing…” – Charlotte Sowanick, fifth grade, Blessed Sacrament School, Washington, D.C.

“My mom is the best mom I’ve ever met! First, my mom works day and night just to make her three kids happy. Every morning, my mom wakes up at 6:30 so she can get the house running. My mom is the most caring and loving person that I have ever met. My mom has many talents that include being great, being brave and much more. My mom is the superhero of my life. Without my mom, I wouldn’t be anywhere in life. My mom has the biggest heart and we both know it. My mom makes sure that my two siblings and I are at the right place at the right time for everything. I admire my mom so much!” – Lila Burman, fifth grade, Blessed Sacrament School, Washington, D.C.

“What I admire about my mom is that she’s the best. She’s independent and does a lot for the house like buying groceries and things we need. Another reason is she makes time for me any time of the day no matter what she is doing; if she’s working or not, she helps out. And finally, she cleans, cooks and she is selfless… That is why my mom is the best and why I admire her. I want to be the best parent just like her when I grow up.” –Tarvon Nolan, fifth grade, Father Andrew White, S.J. School, Leonardtown

“What I admire about my mom is she is always there for me and is kind to me… She is never mad. I always help her if she needs help. She always takes me places I want to go. My mom is the best. I love my mom. I tell my mom everything. She is very giving. Even when I get in a lot of trouble, she forgives me. She always helps me with my sports. She always gives me good advice about school... She is very caring and always nice to my friends. She is very helpful… My mom is the best. I love my mom.” – Carson Pilkerton, fifth grade, Father Andrew White, S..J School, Leonardtown

“What I admire about my mom is she is always kind and loving. She takes me to do fun things like on trips to different states. She is always encouraging me to do the things I love, and she is never disappointed in me. She is always forgiving me if I do something wrong… My mom got our dog, she gives us food, shelter and water. She wants me to do sports I like, and she is always there at my games and practices. She gets me the things I need for school and sports.” – Trevor Vallandingham, fifth grade, Father Andrew White, S.J. School, Leonardtown

“What I admire about Mary is that she is Jesus’ mother and she is very kind. She is also born without original sin… She had perseverance, and she stuck to God’s plan. And she gave birth to the only fully perfect human. She saw Jesus die on the cross which took a lot of bravery. And she was Jesus’ first follower.” – Jackson Yingling, fifth grade, Father Andrew White, S.J. School, Leonardtown

“What I admire about my mother is she is caring. She gives us shelter, she makes us food, and gives me a lot of stuff that I need to survive. She is also loving, because she takes me on fun trips and gives me presents on my birthday. She is nice to me and always forgives and pushes me to an amazing future. These are the reasons I admire and love my mother.” – Carson Abell, fifth grade, Father Andrew White, S.J. School, Leonardtown

“I admire how Mary was always brave and believed in God, no matter what. When Mary was told about being the mother of Christ, she followed God even when feeling unworthy. When Jesus told Mary about his death and resurrection, she believed that it was right because God had commanded it. While watching Jesus die, she felt sad, but remembered about the third day. That is what I admire about our mother in heaven, Mary.” – Sully Allan, fifth grade, Father Andrew White, S.J. School, Leonardtown

Topic for the next Junior Saints

In June, Cardinal Gregory will ordain 16 new priests for The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington. For the next Junior Saints, students are invited to draw a picture and write about their favorite priest. The drawings and writings should be emailed to ZimmermannM@adw.org by Wednesday June 5, 2024 to Mark Zimmermann, the Catholic Standard’s editor, and they should include the name, grade and school or parish of the student printed clearly.

Due to time constraints involved with reviewing the volume of submitted work, it is requested that schools or parish religious education programs limit their entries to 10 drawings and 10 writings from their students. The best formats to send are jpegs for artwork and word documents or pdfs for writing, if possible. Please no long essays. Thank you!
