The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington issued the following statement on Feb. 4, 2025, following a 4-3 ruling by the Maryland Supreme Court on Feb. 3 upholding the 2023 Child Victims Act passed by the state’s legislature that ended the statute of limitations for victims of child sexual abuse to bring lawsuits against institutions. The constitutionality of that law had been challenged by the Archdiocese of Washington, the Key School of Annapolis and the Harford County Board of Education. Here is the text of the archdiocese’s statement:
“The Archdiocese is in the process of reviewing the decision issued by the Supreme Court of Maryland. We remain committed to our longstanding efforts to bring healing to survivors through pastoral care and other forms of assistance. We are also committed to maintaining our robust safe environment protocols that have been in place for decades to ensure the protection of all those who are entrusted to our care.”
