The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington will hold its annual Mass to honor and celebrate the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Hillcrest Heights, Maryland.
Washington Cardinal Wilton Gregory will serve as the principal celebrant and homilist at the Mass. The celebration will begin at 9:30 a.m. with praise and worship led by the Howard University Bison Catholic Gospel Choir, followed by the Mass at 10 a.m. Washington Auxiliary Bishop Roy E. Campbell Jr., will concelebrate the Mass. A fellowship gathering will follow at 11:15 a.m.
The Mass honors the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by recognizing his contributions to social justice and equality. Attendees are invited to this celebration, which aims to highlight the ongoing efforts for justice for all.
Born on Jan. 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. King emerged as a pivotal leader in the American civil rights movement, championing nonviolent resistance to combat racial segregation and inequality. His leadership was instrumental in significant events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington, where he delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his efforts. Tragically, his life was cut short when he was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.
Cardinal Gregory has highlighted the ongoing importance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s mission, urging society to "recall to mind and heart that the issues Dr. King placed before our nation have not been adequately accomplished."
