Claire Schreiber, a former student at St. Bartholomew Catholic School in Bethesda, Maryland, was honored as one of the winners in the 2024 National Christmas Artwork Contest hosted by the Missionary Childhood Association.

Claire, who was in the seventh grade at St. Bartholomew School when her artwork was submitted, earned recognition for her talent in the annual competition showcasing the art of Catholic students from across the country. Her grandparents attended the ceremony and Mass honoring contest winners on Dec. 13 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.

Ivica Bradley, a teacher at St. Bartholomew School, submitted Claire’s artwork to the competition in January. “Claire became our third St. Bart's student to receive this award,” Bradley said in an email, noting that previous winners included Brooke Hughes in 2022 and Sophia Delaney in 2023. “Unfortunately, [Claire] is not attending our school this year, but her heart is always here.”

The Schreiber family temporarily relocated to London last summer, but Claire’s passion for art remains a vibrant part of their lives. "We did not bring much with us overseas, but we did bring Claire’s artwork,” her mother, Bethany Schreiber, said. “Her art brightens our walls and reminds us of home. Art brings Claire great joy, and this piece of art is especially meaningful as it helps us all prepare for Christmas.”

Claire’s artwork holds special significance for her, particularly during the Advent season. “Christmas is Claire’s favorite time of year, and this scene is a reminder of the peace, hope, and love that we celebrate together at Christmas,” Bethany Schreiber added.

Claire Schreiber has been a familiar name at St. Bartholomew, where she contributed regularly to Junior Saints, a popular Catholic Standard feature highlighting the creative works of young students. Over her eight years at the school, Bradley nurtured Claire’s artistic gifts through regular classes and after-school art sessions.

“Claire’s favorite part of creating art is when the piece is finished,” Bethany Schreiber said. “She can see how it comes together and can enjoy it with others. Claire is very happy to be a part of the National Christmas Artwork Contest this year and is thrilled that her grandparents could see it in person.”

The Missionary Childhood Association’s National Christmas Artwork Contest recognizes 22 winners annually, with two grand prize winners whose pieces become the official National Christmas cards of the Pontifical Mission Societies. Winners receive a commemorative plaque and are celebrated at the December event.
