The letter was issued in 1984 by the 10 Black bishops then serving in dioceses across the United States. (Catholic Standard photos by Mihoko Owada)
After celebrating a Sept. 12 Mass at St. Joseph parish in Upper Marlboro, Maryland to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the publication of “What We Have Seen and Heard,” a pastoral letter calling on Black Catholics to share their gifts with the Catholic Church, Cardinal Wilton Gregory reflected on his coauthoring that letter. He said he and his fellow bishop authors “wanted this not to be a document in response to crisis, but a document in response to possibilities.” (Catholic Standard photo by Mihoko Owada)
