Colin Horton, a 17-year-old graduating senior at Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg, Maryland, spent her four years as a member of her school’s varsity lacrosse team, and served as captain of that team for the last two years.

That experience, she said, has provided her with more than just physical fitness.

“Being a member of the lacrosse team has enabled me to lead younger teammates through adversity on the field and off,” she said. “My teammates are so important to me, and I am glad we are playing together this spring.”

In addition, that experience will serve her after her high school career is ended. Horton plans to attend St. Mary's College of Maryland in St. Mary’s City where she will pursue a pre-med degree and play lacrosse.

Her eventual aim, she added, is “to attend medical school after graduation from St. Mary's with the goal of becoming a psychiatrist.”

The daughter of Ben and Monica Horton of College Park, Colin has a younger brother, Declan, who is a sophomore at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. The family attends Holy Redeemer Parish in College Park.

Horton said she chose to attend the all-girls high school sponsored by the Daughters of Charity because “I have attended Catholic school for my entire life, and Seton was the perfect high school choice for me.”

“At Seton, I have found friends and teachers who have strengthened my faith,” she added. “I am surrounded by people with the same morals, ideals and interests.”

Horton has been a four-year member of the Seton Scholars, a merit-based group of students who attend the school on a scholarship. Students must maintain a 3.5 or higher grade point average, perform an additional 10 hours of community service, and participate in at least one extra-curricular activity.

“Scholars has allowed me to participate in service opportunities for those in need in Seton's Bladensburg neighborhood and community,” Horton said.

As a Seton Ambassador, she serves as a representative of Seton at events and activities both at school and in the community.

The ambassadors also visit local middle schools, introducing prospective students to the high school. They assist at school functions and serve as guides and hostesses to visitors.

“My favorite classes have been in Seton’s math and science departments. I find biology to be very interesting and math makes sense to me,” she said. “My teachers in those subjects have helped me to be successful while taking difficult and challenging classes.”

Horton has taken a philosophical approach to finishing her high school years during a time of pandemic.

“My family and I have taken advantage of the ‘bonus’ time together this past year,” she said. “I am grateful for this, knowing that I am leaving for college in August and will be away from them.  We truly enjoy each other's company and know we’ll always be able to rely on one another. “
