New Baltimore archbishop has become face of bishops' drive for religious freedom

With auxiliary bishops seated at his side, new Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori speaks during a March 20 press conference at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore. Pope Benedict XVI named him the new archbishop of Baltimore. Archbishop Lori has led the Diocese of Bridgeport, Conn., since 2001 and succeeds Cardinal Edwin F. O'Brien, grand master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem. Archbishop Lori earlier served as a priest and auxiliary bishop in Washington.
