March Junior Saints: What I am going to do for Lent

(Junior Saints Drawing/ Melanie Moyer, fourth grade, Our Lady Star of the Sea School, Solomons, Maryland)

For the March Junior Saints, students from schools and parishes in the Archdiocese of Washington drew and wrote about the different things they are going to do to try to grow closer to God this Lent. These are a few of the ideas that they had:

"This year for Lent I will take some time every Saturday morning to help my dad in the pantry. I will also continue to pray every night." - Anamaria Palacios, sixth grade, Holy Redeemer Catholic School, Kensington, Maryland
"During this Lent season, I am going to attempt to give up candy. I will also give up brownies, donuts, etc. I hope I can do it!" - Christina Young, eighth grade, St. Jude Regional Catholic School, Rockville, Maryland
"This Lent I will help my mom with something every day! This Lent I wanted to do something that would help someone else, as well as improve myself. I will help my mom whether she asks me or not. I will help her with breakfast, the dishes, and laundry. I hope this will make my mom happy and bring me closer to Jesus and God." -Ireland Donahue, fifth grade, Blessed Sacrament School, Washington, D.C.
"I am going to do one really kind thing every day. I hope that this will make me a better person. I want to love like Jesus did and be kind to everyone. He would want everyone to do this so I will start and try to make it a habit." -Keegan Corbett, fifth grade, Blessed Sacrament School, Washington, D.C.
"This year for Lent I am going to give up junk food. I am going to give up food like candy and chips. This will be hard for me because I like to eat candy and similar things." - Claire Blume, fifth grade, Blessed Sacrament School, Washington, D.C.
"For Lent I am not giving up something but I am going to focus more on giving my allowance to a poor box in Mass every Sunday. This will be hard for me, but it is nothing compared to what Jesus did for us." -Nora Neill, fifth grade, Blessed Sacrament School, Washington, D.C.
"For Lent I will give up my time on my phone and I will pray more." - Ava Wehrs, sixth grade, St. Mary's School, Bryantown, Maryland
"This Lent I am giving up lemonade. I order lemonade a lot at restaurants and fast food places...hopefully this shows God that I put Him above all else." -Shannon Sweeney, St. Mary's School, Bryantown, Maryland
"This year for Lent I really want to honor and put God first, above everything. To celebrate Lent, I am going to put God above things I like, including time on electronics and watching TV...I really want to show God He is the most important person in my life, get ready for Jesus' coming, and become a more holy person by being drawn closer to God and Jesus." -Madilynne Krauss, sixth grade, St. Mary's School, Bryantown, Maryland
"For Lent I will visit the sick and pray with them." -Clare Westlake, fourth grade, St. Peter's School, Olney, Maryland
"For Lent I will pick flowers for the elderly." -Charlee Hartzog, fourth grade, St. Peter's School, Olney, Maryland
"For Lent I will go to Confession more often." -Ephrata Fikremariam, fourth grade, St. Peter's School, Olney, Maryland
