Photo essay: Southern Maryland churches and charitable groups collect supplies shipped by Food for the Poor during pandemic

Known for its extensive outreach to the poor in the Caribbean and Latin America, the relief organization Food for the Poor also sometimes provides emergency assistance to outreach programs in the United States, as it did on Aug. 25, 2020, when it delivered nearly 20 tons of personal care items and food to a warehouse in Waldorf, Maryland. Representatives of 19 Southern Maryland churches, charitable organizations and crisis pregnancy centers on the front lines of serving people in need in that region came to pick up the items, to later distribute them to the poor whom they serve. In the photo above, Evelyn Lawrence, Father Michael Briese and Jenny Batts of St. Mary's Parish in Newport look at a large shipment of rice that was part of Food for the Poor's shipment to Southern Maryland. Father Briese, who has supported that organization's outreach to the poor for many years, helped coordinate the local distribution, inviting churches, charitable organizations and crisis pregnancy centers to pick up supplies to distribute to the poor in their communities.
